126: Empowerment Through Nervous System Regulation with Brittany Cano

126: Empowerment Through Nervous System Regulation with Brittany Cano

I attended a lifestyle medicine conference in Denver, Colorado not long ago and it got me very energized because I felt I was with my people; the people who shared common values with me. But as much as I’m excited about diving into lifestyle medicine, I’m always frustrated by the fact that nobody addresses the question of why people don’t stick to these healthy habits. One of the speakers at the conference did, however, address it by stating that sometimes we’re in stress response and that stress makes it impossible for us to take on new changes. Which is why I’m so thrilled to have Brittany Cano on the show today. Brittany is a personal trainer, holistic health coach, mindfulness and emotional freedom technique practitioner, Reiki healer, and Yin yoga instructor. She is an expert in nervous system regulation and that’s what I want to share with you all today.

Brittany and I talk about how carrying shame, being in a shame cycle, tends to cause us to make poorer health choices, just like stress responses do. The carrying of shame and stress connects to us in physical ways. I would get digestive upset and heartburn when I didn’t take my stress into account, which is a connection Brittany also experienced. The holistic care route is connected to the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and to our social lives. As Brittany says, “It's easier to make a change when your nervous system is regulated and you're not in survival mode” and that’s part of the key to not just discovering lifestyle medicine but making those healthy choices stick. The conversation I have with Brittany about stress, regulation modalities like tapping, finding community, and learning to connect with our own emotional experiences is so inspiring and so encouraging, and I want you to feel the same beautiful revelation that I did through our talk.
